چکیده

Abstract. We develop a general theory of the swelling kinetics of polymer gels, with the view that a polymer gel is a two-phase fluid. The model we propose is a free boundary problem and can be used to understand both contraction and swelling, including complete dissolving or dehydration of polymeric gels. We show that the equations of motion satisfy a minimum energy dissipation rate principle similar to the Helmholz minimum dissipation rate principle which holds for a Stokes’ flow. We also show, using asymptotic analysis and numerical simulation, how the equilibrium swelled state and the swelling rate constant are related to the free energy and rheological properties of the polymer network.

Influence of the standard free energy on swelling kinetics of gels.

Classical theories of gel swelling employ the mixing free energy, thereby ignoring any effects of the free energy of the pure phases,i.e., the polymer standard free energy. In this paper we present a model for the swelling kinetics of gels that incorporates the free energy, including the polymer standard free energy. We provide a complete analysis of how the swelling kinetics and stable states ...

MODELING DRUG RELEASE FROM DYNAMICALLY SWELLING POLY(HYDl?OXYETHYL METHACRYLATE-CO-METHACRYLIC ACID) HYDROGELS

Drug release from a swelling hydrogel matrix is a complicated process where diffusion of drug molecules is coupled to the swelling kinetics. The swelling influences the diffusional flux of drug molecules by increasing the diffusion coefficient and diffusional pathlength. Release of phenylpropanolamine from apoly(hydroxyethy1 methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) hydrogel, initially at low pH, is hi...

Swelling/deswelling of anionic copolymer gels.

Studies of dynamic and equilibrium swelling of ionic gels are important in understanding the diffusion of physiologically important fluids in materials for site-specific controlled drug delivery applications. The dynamic and equilibrium swelling properties of dry glassy poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) polymeric networks...

Poroelastic swelling kinetics of thin hydrogel layers: comparison of theory and experiment

Thin poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels were allowed to swell under two conditions: as freestanding layers and as substrate-attached layers. Through a combination of particle tracking and defocusing methods, the positions of beads embedded within the gels were monitored over time via fluorescence microscopy, providing a convenient method to track the kinetics of swelling for layers ...

Biopolymeric Formulations for Biocatalysis and Biomedical Applications

Three gel disks formulations prepared using chitosan (Chito) or polyethylenimine (PEI) followed by glutaraldehyde were prepared for biocatalysis and biomedical applications. The carriers have been used to immobilize lactase covalently and it was evaluated in terms of enzyme loading capacity and enzyme kinetics (km and Vmax). The Km of the Chito formulation was almost half that of the PEI formul...
